Ceremony
The ceremony of Confirmation consists of various moving parts. The sacrament of confirmation is celebrated within the Church during a Mass. During the period of receiving the sacrament, “the bishop extends his hands over the heads of those to be confirmed and calls the Holy Spirit upon them. Then the candidates come before the bishop who anoints each one’s forehead with Chrism (which is consecrated, perfumed olive oil) and pronounces the words: ‘Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit’” (REsource, n/d). During this period, the candidate’s sponsor stands behind them and places one hand on the candidates shoulder. A confirmation sponsor is chosen by the candidate and is a person over the age of 18 years old that supports the candidate as they prepare to confirm their membership in the church.
